Dot-science top level domain: Academic websites or dumpsites?

Dot-science was launched in 2015 as a new academic top-level domain aimed to provide ‘a dedicated, easily accessible location for global Internet users with an interest science’. The main objective of this work is find out the general scholarly usage domain. In particular, following three questions are pursued: (number web domains registered dot-science), purpose (main function and category websites linked these domains), impact (websites’ visibility authority). To do this, 13,900 names were gathered through ICANN’s Domain Name Registration Data Lookup database. Each subsequently categorized, data on obtained from Majestic’s API. Based results obtained, it concluded that dot-science scarcely adopted by community, mainly used registrar companies reselling purposes (35.5% all parked). Websites receiving highest number backlinks generally related non-academic applying intensive link building practices offering leisure or even fraudulent contents. trust flow metric has been proved effective method filter reputable websites. As regards primary academic-related categories, 1175 (8.5% registered) found, personal (342 blogs (261) research groups (133). All dubious content reveals bad Web, where tag ‘science’ fundamentally mechanism deceive search engine algorithms.
